Located within the Cawthron Aquaculture Park at Glenduan, Nelson, the highly specialised facilities at the National Algae Research Centre extend the Institute’s ability to undertake wide-ranging research into micro and macro algae.
A glulam timber structure, for reduced carbon and corrosion risk, creates an innovative ‘glasshouse’ laboratory environment. The design provides high sunlight access, critical for algae growth, and enables Cawthron’s specialist work in extracting high-value bioactive compounds from microalgae.
