Falcon Ridge House

Falcon Ridge House

Located on a steep hillside above a Nelson valley, Falcon Ridge House is a residential project that responds directly to the landform, ensuring privacy and long-range views, while the building is positioned to capture natural sunlight throughout the day.

The house adopts a low, linear form that follows the natural contours of the site. This approach reduces visual impact and helps the structure sit comfortably within its landscape.

The floorplan is organised around a courtyard that brings light into the centre of the home and creates a protected outdoor space. Extensive glazing strengthens the connection between inside and outside, with living areas opening out to a pool terrace arranged to capture sun and outlook.

A ‘Water Rill’ feature at the entrance marks the transition into the home and introduces a subtle sensory element. Natural light is thoughtfully used throughout the plan, interacting with surfaces to create variation and depth.

The design is conceived as a low-slung butterfly roof pavilion, anchored to the site with two large stone chimneys and stone walls. This horizontal emphasis frames expansive landscape views from the site.

Throughout the home, materials are selected for durability, simplicity, and relevance to the site. Locally sourced Lee Valley stone plays a central role, forming fireplaces, thresholds, and low landscape walls. The stone provides visual weight and a strong connection to the site’s geology.  More than simply cladding, the stone is integrated into the architecture, anchoring key spaces.

The home was realised through close collaboration between the client, architect, and builder. Shared attention to detail ensured the design intent was carried through to construction. The result is a well-built, enduring home that reflects a commitment to quality design.
