Completion of stage one of Tewa Banks: A new community in Arrowtown

JTB Architects is proud to announce the completion of the first phase of the Tewa Banks affordable housing development in Arrowtown. This milestone marks a significant step forward in addressing the housing needs of the Queenstown Lakes District.

The initial stage comprises six one-bedroom homes, thoughtfully designed for seniors on the government’s public housing register. Each residence features low-maintenance gardens, is connected to a ground source heat pump for energy efficiency, and has achieved a Homestar 6 (v4) rating, ensuring low heating costs and a high standard of sustainability.
Tewa Banks, located off Jopp Street, is the largest undertaking by the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust to date. Upon completion in 2026, the development will encompass 68 homes, including 15 social housing units, four rent-to-buy homes, five affordable rentals, and 44 assisted ownership properties. This diverse mix aims to foster a balanced and inclusive community.
JTB Architects collaborated closely with the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust to design homes that maximise sunlight, views, and private open spaces.
The project is located on a 3.6 hectare site beside the Arrow River and adjacent to the Arrowtown Golf Club. It is named after Jack Tewa who is credited with first discovering gold in the Arrow River in 1862. JTB Architects provided masterplanning services for the whole site, and are the lead designers of every home while providing construction observation services throughout the build.
