This holiday home, with stunning views overlooking Tata Beach, is
designed to sit unobtrusively within the elevated setting.
The house is angled and fractured with the roof broken in two,
the large picture window is tilted to avoid reflections and colours are dark and
recessive to blend with the shadows. These techniques assist the house to sit
lightly on the hillside and blends in with the bush backdrop.
Inside, walls of rooms are subtly angled to follow the axis of views to the
beach and the islands. Upper rooms open out onto a large deck with the
completely private swimming pool, while downstairs bedrooms look out though
trees to the sea.
The darkness of both the inside and exterior is offset by bright colour accents
of red and orange, references to the pohutakawa and gum flowers on the site. The
exterior features a Corten (self rusting steel) balustrade that echoes the
weathered granite landscape on which the house sits.
